Conservation

Stewards of our natural world

Biodiverse habitats are a cornerstone of our industry.

Yet keeping natural attractions pristine serves a bigger purpose — protecting the planet.

By employing a science-based approach to track change, implement efficient operations and deploy awareness programmes, we are able to provide an adaptive framework that can be implemented in any environment.

All hands on deck: from experts to citizen scientists

Collaboration is key to our conservation efforts.

Our site-specific initiatives offer numerous active and passive engagement opportunities for guests to support environmental awareness, protection and restoration. Our Citizen Science programme allows guests to participate in environmental monitoring, turtle conservation, coral reef remediation and other efforts.

Marine Conservation Labs

Our marine labs are unique not only in being resort-based but also in their overall concept.

Designed to provide facilities and equipment for fieldwork conducted by visiting scientists, they also promote marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods in local communities.

Currently, three marine labs carry the banner for our sustainability efforts in Asia Pacific: Banyan Tree Maldives Marine Lab serving Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Angsana Ihuru (since 2004), Banyan Tree Maldives Marine Lab, Velavaru (2006) and Conservation Lab Bintan (2007).

turtle hatching koh samui
Every year between February and March the Gulf of Thailand attracts green turtles who nest along the coast, including the beach in front of Banyan Tree Samui. To protect hundreds of eggs laid here every season, we help ward off predators and monitor sand temperature.

At Banyan Tree Mayakoba, reforestation of coral reefs is a team effort. From local communities and businesses to hotel guests and employees, everyone is given an opportunity to help in construction of coral nurseries and transplantation of thousands of colonies to increase diversity and promote the resilience of marine life.
full moon party
Taking the Earth Hour initiative further, our property in the Maldives dedicates 12 hours each month to driving climate change awareness. Every full moon night the resort turns off the main lights from dusk till dawn and hosts candlelit dinners, night snorkels with Marine Lab team and other sustainability initiatives.
